Murillo did not create but modified the existing iconography of Mary Immaculate, iconography that Francisco Pacheco, Velazquez’s father-in-law had spread in his works, and from which drank the works of Velazquez, Herrera the Elder, Zurbarán.

Murillo broke the previous statism and endowed his Immaculate with a vigorous dynamism and ascensional sense, the movement of the cape is intuitive, and he may have taken the idea of the Immaculate that Ribera painted for the Discalced Augustinian Sisters of Salamanca.

The second Immaculate also has to do with the Franciscans, it is the canvas that is conserved in the Archbishop’s Palace of Seville “The Immaculate and Fray Juan de Quirós”, commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Vera Cruz with headquarters in the convent of San Francisco.

It is called “La Colosal” because of its large proportions, since it was made to be placed on the arch of the main chapel, at a great height and distance from the viewer. With her hands joined, the Virgin looks downwards, accentuating the sensation of depth for those who contemplate her. The desired effect of spatial mobility of baroque character is achieved through two diagonals: the one formed by the moon with the cloud and the angels and the one formed by the flight of the mantle.

The Museum of Fine Arts of Seville is an emblematic place for the knowledge of the artistic personality of Murillo, since it preserves one of the most important collections of paintings by the artist.

The Museum of Fine Arts occupies the former Convent of the Merced Calzada of Seville, which was founded by St. Peter Nolasco shortly after the conquest of the city by Ferdinand III. The present building was begun in 1603 by the architect and sculptor Juan de Oviedo, undergoing several remodeling works in the following centuries.

With the disentailment of Mendizábal, the Mercedarian monks were exclaustrated and the convent was destined to house the paintings requisitioned from the religious institutions that had been expropriated. On September 16, 1835 it was founded as the “Museum of Paintings” by Royal Decree.
