The College of the Major Art of Silk (in Valencian Col-legi de l’Art Major de la Seda)[1] is an institution that was constituted as the Guild of Velluters, whose first ordinances were approved by King Ferdinand the Catholic in 1479.[2] Its main function was to regulate the trade and production of silk fabrics in the city of Valencia.

In 1981 it was declared a national historic-artistic monument, and on June 17, 2016 it was inaugurated as the Silk Museum of Valencia after a thorough and necessary restoration thanks to the patronage of the Hortensia Herrero Foundation.

Also in 1477 the Confraternity of St. Jerome, doctor of the Church elected patron saint of silk workers as he was considered the first cardinal in history, was constituted and the cardinals wore silk woven habits,[4] It was in 1494 when the guild acquired this house and its orchard, which adapted them to the guild’s needs.

The production of silk was very significant for the economy of the Kingdom of Valencia between the XV and XVIII centuries, and for this reason this corporation carried out progressive actions to achieve the transition from trade to College. In general, the associations of arts and crafts in the city of Valencia have evolved almost in tandem, starting from the Guild model and then evolving towards the College model.

The “Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda” has its origins in the 15th century, due to the need to unify the criteria for the production of silk in Valencia, given the conflicts that arose due to the lack of quality of some producers. This is how the “Gremi de Velluters” (velvet weavers) was born, which approved on February 16, 1479 the first ordinances of the guild. These ordinances were officially ratified by King Ferdinand the Catholic on October 13, 1479. The Guild was elevated to College of the Major Art of Silk by means of the title granted to them by King Charles II in 1686.
