That is to say, it would matter little what the spectator would find on stage, given the mass of readers that (the book) “Los asquerosos” will drag to the theaters. The staging is a safe bet and is bound to succeed. The good thing is that, in this case, the adaptation does not detract at all from the material on which it is based.

Yes, everything works in (the play) “Los asquerosos”. In fact, its short duration (90 minutes) gives the story an agility that the book lacked, which at times could be repetitive (when it recreated itself in the reproaches to the disgusting “mochufas” or in the bonanzas that Manuel found in his retirement). The rhythm on the stage gives no respite (in fact, perhaps the denouement is a bit abrupt and could use a few more minutes of development before dropping the curtain).

Manuel has injured a policeman and has fled, taking refuge at his uncle’s house. He does not know the extent of the injury but his uncle advises him to disappear: whatever the severity, they will find him and he will spend a long time in jail.

Manuel has no choice but to escape by taking advantage of the night and takes refuge in a lost and abandoned village, a village they both decide to call Zarzahuriel. There, despite having almost nothing and subsisting by miracle, Manuel discovers his cool life. He only has telephone contact with his uncle, who helps him as much as he can from a distance. The peace, tranquility and freedom that Manuel breathes in Zarzahuriel do not make him miss anything, on the contrary, his precariousness is what brings him close, almost to the point of happiness. And this is so until an urbanite family, the mochufas, as he calls them, decides to enjoy rural life and buys and settles in another of the abandoned houses of Zarzahuriel. This unexpected coexistence will disrupt Manuel’s existence and will dirty his paradise forever.
