Over the semicircular arch, a shield with eagle, yoke and arrows supported by two angels has been placed, in allusion to the coats of arms and shields found on the facades of Renaissance houses and palaces. The dimensions of the entrance arch are larger than those of the lower arch that connects the atrium with the square. This is achieved by highlighting the access, while obtaining a peculiar visual effect.

It should be noted that the entrance courtyard is laid out in the manner of a “Corinthian atrium” as described by the Roman architect Vitruvius in the 1st century B.C. and designed by the Renaissance architect Palladio in the 16th century for the Convent of Charity in Venice. It is worth noting that both the ten columns of the Corinthian atrium and the almost one hundred columns that are spread throughout the building, hardly bear any load. Their function is essentially decorative.

Framed in a Herrerian style architecture, the central courtyard of Laboral City of Culture, presents a large open extension of 150 meters long by 50 meters wide, capable of accommodating large crowds.

agenda cultural asturiana

la laboral building in gijon

La Laboral University has had to address different functions throughout its history, to adapt and accommodate the different social moments, not only in Gijon but throughout Asturias.  Today La Laboral, besides being a University, is a reference for culture in Oviedo and almost every week there are concerts, plays, musicals and different shows. If you are visiting Gijón, or if you have decided to spend a few days in Asturias, be sure to check its agenda, it will surely surprise you!

As a consequence of the continuous fatal accidents in the Asturian mines, it was necessary to plan the construction of an orphanage. In October 1945 a charitable foundation was created with the name of “José Antonio Girón”, in homage to the then Minister of Labor.

The Teatro de la Laboral was originally conceived as an auditorium for the students and professors of the University to use and is notable for its Hellenic façade and its dimensions similar to those of the Parthenon. Its entrance is guarded by statues of six great writers: Miguel de Cervantes, Leandro Fernández de Moratín, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Francisco de Quevedo and Lope de Vega.
