LACMA is an almost encyclopedic museum: among other sections, it houses Assyrian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman archaeology, European painting and one of the largest collections of Latin American art. More than 2,000 Latin American works were donated by Bernard Lewin and his wife Edith Lewin. Currently, the support of the Broad couple, well known in the contemporary art market, has marked a new direction for the museum, with the construction of a new building designed for the exhibition of their private collection. This patronage relationship has imposed certain conditions that are questioned by some critics.

LACMA was founded in 1910 as part of the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art. It had no collection of its own, and in its early days exhibited works on loan. In the 1920s-30s the museum grew rapidly, and by 1945-50 it received major donations from the controversial William Randolph Hearst, the mogul who inspired Orson Welles’ film Citizen Kane. In 2008, the museum dedicated an exhibition to Hearst, bringing together some of the works he donated.
