It has two floors. The upper one is about 390 meters long and the lower one is approximately 174 meters long. While the upper floor carries the Porto Metro D line, the lower floor is dedicated to other vehicles such as cars, buses or trucks. There are walkways for people to pass on both floors.

Because of its fame and beauty, the bridge attracts a large number of tourists. The views from the upper deck offer the visitor a panoramic view of the Douro River as it passes through the city, as well as the neighborhoods that were born on both sides of the river.

Which two cities does portugal dom luís bridge connect?

The most emblematic bridge of Oporto and tourist icon of Portugal has been restricted for the first time. From this week the traffic on the majestic metal viaduct over the Douro River that connects the “invicta” with Vila Nova de Gaia is limited.

For the next twelve months the bridge of Don Luis I will be completely closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, although Portuguese and foreign tourists will have to walk between works. Only the underpass will be affected.

Why is it closed? The Don Luis I bridge, mainly its lower deck where pedestrians and vehicles circulate, is going to undergo a major rehabilitation to reinforce it and also eliminate its vibrations. It has a budget of 3.3 million euros.

In addition, although with a view to 2025, the intention is to create a new bridge for vehicles over the Douro River (to be named D. António Francisco dos Santos). Once this new infrastructure has been completed, the Portuguese authorities intend to leave the Don Luis I bridge for use by the public.

The Bridge of Don Luis I and its surroundings are one of the most beautiful and romantic places in Portugal, just take a walk at sunset by the upper walkway of the bridge to see the beauty of the views it offers. The charm and majesty that gives us make it one of my most beloved places and that most impacts me every time I visit them.of the many bridges in Porto is the best known and most impressive of the city. Built over the Douro River, it joins the riverside of the city with the pier of Vilanova de Gaia. Today it is part of the Historic Center of Porto, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Unfortunately, the weather was unfortunate for us on this day. However I think that despite having to go with an umbrella in one hand and the camera in the other, I managed to see this bridge in a different light than we are used to.almost always this bridge is usually associated with the city of Porto, and yet now that I have had the opportunity to observe it from this and from Vila Nova de Gaia, I’ll take this second option to admire it more in depth. The bridge of Luis I inaugurated in 1886, was built on the remains of another that existed in the same place called Ponte Pénsil. The project is due to the Belgian engineer Théodophile Seyring who was a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, so its iron frame of 3,000 tons is deeply reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower.
