Its name is due to the fact that, until 1929, the old Apolo Theater was operating on Alcalá Street until the businessmen responsible decided to open a new one. The chosen location was the Plaza del Progreso, today known as Tirso de Molina. In fact, the building was called Teatro Progreso until it reopened in 1987 as Teatro Nuevo Apolo.
The Teatro Cofidís Alcázar has always been open to various theatrical choices. For a short period it even became a cinema screening room, in the 1930s, standing as one of the first theaters with a built-in sound projector. Today, it houses comedy shows, monologues and musicals, comedy, vaudeville, English-language theater and family theater…
In the same place formerly occupied by some well-known multiplexes, there are now the Luchana Theaters, which, in spite of making a different use of the space, have decided to preserve its history. For this reason, throughout the premises you can find large projectors, film cutting and assembling machines, film reels…

The Teatro de la Comedia was built in 1874 on a lot on Príncipe Street, owned by Mr. Silverio López de Larrainza. The architect Agustín Ortiz de Villajos was in charge of its construction. The inauguration took place on September 18, 1875, in the presence of King Alfonso XII. On the night of April 17-18, 1915, a fire broke out and destroyed the interior of the theater. The theater was rebuilt in a few months incorporating, for the first time, reinforced concrete.
With the rehabilitation of the theater, the work of the architects Araujo and Nadal, spaces have been recovered and new equipment has been created: a large cistern for the fire extinguishing system, elevation of the stage to install the comb and the counter-comb, a platform to expand the proscenium, and a new room (Tirso de Molina room) located on the fourth floor, for performances and rehearsals.
