Teatro de la zarzuela la revoltosa

the great zarzuela via completa

Zarzuela would spend half its life reinventing itself as it was consumed in a frenzy of titles of which hardly a significant portion has remained. The diversification of formats and content will be remarkable, largely because the initial artistic and aesthetic purpose soon became a product of entertainment at the whim of fashion, that is, of a situation that, for a century, will be forced to transform itself into very different categories in order to maintain its strength in the face of an audience eager for novelty.

Another moment of reference, closer to us, has its origin in the celebration of the Jornadas sobre actualidad y futuro de la zarzuela, held in November 1991, of which there remains a revealing volume that is included as a starting point.

Shortly thereafter several initiatives have arisen that have sought to “update” zarzuela, whether from the scientific perspective (with an abundance of studies and editions), or from the theatrical (with proposals more appropriate to the theatrical-dramatic reality of our time, as the Teatro de la Zarzuela has produced them), even in reference to a new, irregular and revealing catalog of sound and visual recordings.

In all these places the steps of the composer have been followed, from his birth until his early death. His training, his experiences, his successes and misfortunes.
