Curious incident of the dog in the night-time film
Christopher Boone is a young man affected by Ausperger’s syndrome (although Mark Haddon never defined it as such in his novel and has preferred to use the term “different”). He lives his world in the literal sense. He is incapable of lying and is gifted in mathematics. He attends a school for young people with special needs where his teacher and mentor Siobhan encourages him to write the book of his life, a book that Christopher carries on his back at all times. When Christopher finds Wellington, a neighbor’s dog, dead, with a pitchfork stuck in his body in the garden of his block of apartments, he decides to investigate the incident to discover the perpetrator of the crime. Christopher’s father becomes nervous when he reads the results of his son’s inquiries and will punish him, removing and hiding the book. Christopher will search for and find the book and also the letters, unopened, addressed to him by his mother whom he believed to be dead. Faced with his father’s violent reaction, Christopher runs away from home to undertake the journey alone to London in search of his mother. This is not the place to reveal the outcome of this story. Suffice it to say that Christopher will not only find his mother, but that he will bring his parents closer to each other and to him, and that he will enrich the people around him with his experiences and his discoveries, as well as enriching himself.
