‘lholandès errant’ (2016/17) – senta’s ballad.
THE MONKEY’S LEG by W.W JacobsThe story takes place in the house of Mr. and Mrs. White and their son Herbert. After a day like everyone else comes to visit an English officer who being in India (fruit of mystery for the English of that time) speaks of a monkey’s paw that seems to have magical powers granted by an old fakir. The curiosity aroused by this object will be the beginning of the story. This story is the first I read by the author, I didn’t like his style, I found it a bit simplistic (although in horror stories it is not what stands out most in general), the plot didn’t enchant me either, it is a horror story with macabre events that of course have as an objective to create fear and suspense more than anything else. Yes, there is certainly a talent for maintaining tension, but I’ve read better books in terms of this element and therefore it’s not enough for me to give it a higher score. I will try to read more by the author to get a better idea.
“THE TRANSFORMATION” by Mary ShelleyWell the story is about Guido, a very attractive young Genoese man and millionaire who however in the course of his life will be ruined due to expenses and dissipations, something by then perhaps very frequent among the ancient aristocracy, for this tale is set in the 15th century. Paris will be the source of doom for this young man (English writers always with their theme against France). Guido tells us how pride was a force he could never resist throughout his life, at least so he says, always the “do whatever I want” was his impulse and totem to rather ruin his life, of course, in reality, that hides all the vices and other unjustifiable behaviors, but at least Guido pretends apparently that this “freedom” was what always led him to expect nothing from anyone and not obey the wisest advice of those close to him. However, this is not the main thing in this plot because at one point the protagonist will find himself before a supernatural being who, besides inspiring a terrible fear, will offer him a good deal.Interesting and easy to read.
