The parrot’s little shop

The monologue arises from poor, oppressed and alternative environments. Although it would take shape during the 20th century, it is true that we find very similar traces in some older shows, such as the Italian commedia dell’arte or the British music hall. It also arises from ethnic minorities, who often make humor about themselves and their precarious social or work situation. It is thus a form of criticism from the very beginning, using humor as its main weapon.

The contemporary monologue has seen its birth and massification through a specific communication channel: television. However, the deep connection between stand up comedy and theater cannot be ignored. Both spaces mutually feed each other, because the viewer, after seeing a recognizable character on the set, ends up wanting to go see that same character live. Likewise, after having enjoyed them live, they will not miss their shows when they happen to see them on television.
