La casa de los espíritus teatro

Isabel Allende wrote The House of the Spirits in 1982. It tells the story of the Trueba family over four generations, a period spanning almost a century, in a country undergoing enormous socio-political changes that culminated in a devastating dictatorship. Alba is in charge of reconstructing a story marked by the tension between memory, contradictions, violence and how the sense of reconciliation with the things that happen in a country and in a family is rescued. Of course, within that there is forgiveness. And, basically, love. The whole play is like a labyrinth full of magical realism in which we can see how politics hovers over people’s heads without us having anything to do with it.

Undoubtedly, one of the strong points of the production is the extraordinary dramaturgy that Portaceli and Ricart have created: a work of theatrical engineering very well sustained throughout the three and a half hours that the production lasts. It is great how they have managed to merge on stage the real characters and the spirits, maintaining the magical tone of the novel at all times. A brilliant dramaturgy that is endorsed by the no less sensational staging by Carmen Portaceli who, with ‘La casa de los espíritus’, signs one of her best works as a director.
In the interpretative section, all the members of the cast are fabulous and, throughout the three and a half hours of the show, they leave their skin on the stage. Francesc Garrido is absolutely brilliant as Fernando Trueba, the patriarch of the family. The actor gives a real recital delighting us from beginning to end with one of the best performances of his career. Carmen Conesa is also splendid as Clara del Valle, giving us a luminous and fascinating performance. The two of them support a cast of many carats in which also shines Gabriela Flores, elegant and superb playing Férula, Esteban’s sister, and Tránsito (a prostitute who ends up being one of the winners of the story).
