The Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville is the work of architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín. The quantity surveyor, responsible for the execution of the works, was Manuel Saavedra López, of the company Cubiertas y MZOV. It was inaugurated in 1991. It is located next to the Torre del Oro and the bullring of the Real Maestranza, near the Guadalquivir River.
Despite the 153 operas with plots set in the city,[3] it did not have adequate facilities to host such events. The closest Seville had ever had to an opera house was the Teatro de San Fernando, which opened in 1847 and was demolished in 1973. Hundreds of operas were performed at the Teatro de San Fernando and it achieved international fame in the 1860s.[4] In addition, the Teatro de la Maestranza, which opened in 1847, was demolished in 1973.
Also, the Teatro de la Maestranza is home to the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville (ROSS), which not only participates regularly in opera performances, but throughout the season develops here an intense season of concerts. In the 2007 refurbishment, a rehearsal room was added exclusively for the ROSS.[11] The auditorium is also used as a rehearsal space for the ROSS.
